"Thorne and Moorends Town Council has appointed Directions Planning Consultancy Ltd to steer the Town Council through the neighbourhood planning process. This means making sure the Town Council meets all the legal requirements of the process, as well as passing on knowledge and experience of how to go about drafting a neighbourhood plan.
As a Practice, we are supporting a number of town and parish councils across Yorkshire to prepare neighbourhood plans. Every one of the neighbourhood plans and the councils is different, particularly in terms of the local issues to be addressed in the neighbourhood plan. What has surprised us in relation to Thorne and Moorends Town Council is the abundancy of enthusiasm and the sheer volume of brilliant ideas. This website is evidence of that, as whilst it is not unusual for a website to be used to publicise progress and act as a platform for consultation, the depth and content is remarkable. Now the Town Council is fully equipped to draft a neighbourhood plan, the focus of efforts needs to shift to the contents of the document. After all, it is intended to set out the community’s plans for the parishes of Thorne and Moorends in the years to come. This is a difficult task because it requires identification of matters that the planning system has the powers to influence, manage and change. This requires the input of everyone who has an interest in the future of the two towns. So, to make sure the neighbourhood plan sets out what everyone wants, we would like to encourage everyone to get involved and respond to future consultations that will help shape the content of the neighbourhood plan." Kathryn Jukes Directions Planning Consultancy "The Olympic Games and its legacy will feature in many people's minds for years to come. Future planning is key in maintaining interest and participation in schools and at a grassroot community level. The Olympic Games have provided the perfect springboard to enable young people to dream of becoming the next sporting hero. The focus on School and Community Sport should be of paramount importance Not only should two hours of sporting activity be the minimum requirement for children, (ideally five hours per week) but any future plan must go much wider into grass root communities.
Easy access to state of the art facilities must be available to all in ex pit villages and old industry towns as we see in large conurbations and city centres. Investment in local sports programmes and initiatives overseen by local authorities and Town Councils must be persistently championed. The Health benefits involved in tackling obesity, improving and changing the poor lifestyle choices of every individual, through a Sport in the Community programme would be clear to see. Tackling anti social behaviour by providing children with an avenue of avoiding getting into harms way by good, constructive and meaningful group activities has to be a positive step forward. Inspiring the next generation will require support, great coaching and facilities fit for purpose. Coaching is very important if an individual has developed talent or even an interest. The only way for the individual to develop talent is to give them a bat, ball and a playing field and let them play. Talent is developed individually and collectively: teaching introduces the skill and coaching develops the talent and skill. More children should be encouraged in doing more competitive sport collectively. Thorne and Moorends Town Councillors have expressed interest in bringing back the Annual Sports Gala in August 2013. There is significant interest within the local community and sports clubs to suggest a return to a once popular event, would stimulate grassroot sport and enable the community to participate at all levels. Thorne and Moorends Town Council are encouraging our local children and youth to engage with the local community tell us what want, be it an athletics track, an outdoor gym or a state of the art youth club. Any idea big or small will be fed into the NeighbourHood Plan." Cllr Mark Houlbrook |
"I think we need more housing in Thorne and Moorends. Also more activities for children."
Rebecca "I think there's plenty for people to do in Thorne and Moorends but I think the children would appreciate a better park / play area in Moorends and also a bike park because children like playing on their BMX. I would also like to see some bus stops on the corners so people have better access to public transport."
Tracy "I appreciate that the cost of staffing is costly, but more care could be taken when grass is cut around the graves. We spend time cleaning the headstones, but when the grass is cut it is left all around the grave and stuck all over the headstones. I like what has been done on the newer side where the headstones have concrete paths running between them. I think this way for headstones is the way forward.
I know there is a lot of complaints by disabled about the parking issue in the cemetery, but I agree for health and safety reasons this should be stopped, but maybe help via a golf buggy and assistance could be given for people experiencing difficulty in carrying maintenance tools etc, and maybe a small charge for this when booking the buggy? I would like to add that the cemetery is one of the best that I have seen, well done to the maintenance staff." Glenys, Thorne "The people are generally really nice and shop owners can be really friendly in Thorne and Moorends but I think there needs to be more free activities for young people."
Helen We need to change all of the shops in the Town (Thorne) that are falling to pieces. They make the place look untidy.
Eileen "The walled garden in the park would be an excellent place to have an outdoor community gym facility, like the one at Balby Carr Sports College. Alternatively, its a great size for crazy golf or an adventure playground."
Anon "I have concerns regarding youths gathering on the streets. I think if there was more for children to do then they wouldn't be bored and gather on the streets. I also think businesses need to be attracted to Thorne and Moorends because they are closing and being boarded up."
Louise "I like the community spirit in Thorne and Moorends but have concerns regarding groups of Youths gathering on the streets. I think if the kids had more to do, then this would be prevented. I also have concerns regarding businesses closing and being boarded up, for example pubs closing down."
Cheryl "I congratulate & welcome the efforts to regenerate the Moorends Recreation Grounds, it is an excellent asset that has been sadly neglected until the regeneration project started. The improvements to the existing facilities are now becoming more apparent & the re introduction of the Summer Gala will be a great attraction for the whole community, enabling them to be introduced to the sports facilities which are available there for the whole community to participate in."
Jean "Thorne was once a thriving and bustling community; Full of hard working people at the forefront of this countries industries. It is sad that over the years, key buildings within Thorne and Moorends have been lost or allowed to fall into significant disrepair. It is brilliant to hear that progress is finally being made at 1 and 2 Market Place and I look forward to seeing the results of this. I think once works are completed on the Market Place, the Market will flourish again and the development at Tesco on Capitol Park should bring an influx of shoppers in from surrounding areas such as Stainforth and Rawcliffe, which I hope will improve foot-fall into Finkle Street and the Town Centre."
